Whey protein as a dietary supplement - its composition and effects

Whey protein is one of the most common types of protein to the food supplement market there and is produced from whey protein. Whey protein is available as a dietary supplement in three different ways : as a whey protein concentrate , as a whey protein isolate and as a whey protein hydrolyzate . The most common form is the whey protein concentrate , which has a protein content of at least 75 percent. It has an enormously high biological value, a low fat content and is overall inexpensive and of high quality. Another form of whey protein is the whey protein isolate . This is a specially treated whey protein in which the fat and lactose content are almost completely removed during the manufacturing process. Whey protein isolate therefore has a protein content between 90 and 96 percent and is also better suited for lactose-intolerant users. Finally, the whey protein hydrolyzate is a whey protein in which the peptide chains have already been broken down and can therefore be used even faster by the body than regular whey protein. For use in sports , whey protein is suitable as a protein shake in conjunction with water or fruit juice directly after training. Here, whey protein ensures rapid regeneration and supports the immune system. Intake recommendations vary between 20 and 40 grams of whey protein powder after training, depending on the athlete. If, on the other hand, whey protein is to be used for weight loss, this can also be taken as a meal replacement in conjunction with low-fat milk.
